What is TABU?
TABU is an action group formed in 2000, on behalf of Tollerton village Nottinghamshire, to challenge wherever possible the incursion of large housing developments within our boundaries.
There have been several initiatives to develop the land around Tollerton which many residents feel is against the best interests of the local environment.
- Some of you may well remember 1500 houses being proposed by Bryant Homes on the area known as Jubilee Wood to the north of the village which produced an outcry from residents with over 90% of residents signing the petition against such a development.
- A proposal to develop a football stadium at Holme Pierrepont and Gamston
- A proposal to build a new housing development between Tollerton and Gamston
TABU has formed a committee, updated its rules of operation, opened bank accounts for donations to cover operational costs, and put an action plan in place.

What can you do now?
So where are we today? Support of petitions has been superb. Our thanks go to all residents and particularly the loyal band of canvassers who no doubt have already called on you seeking your signature.
The petition will be handed to Neil Clarke, Leader of the Rushcliffe Borough Council and we then await the next stages
It is very important that if you have an opinion you should voice it either for or against
- Via the Rushcliffe BC web site, on the front page click What’s the big picture, than click and follow the link to add your comments.
- Write to our MP The Right Hon Kenneth Clarke MP QC at The house of Commons, Westminster, London WC1
- Write to our local councillors Cllr Reg Adaire, County Hall, Trent Bridge, Nottingham NG2 7QP and Cllr. Debbie Mason, The civic Centre, Pavilion Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 5FE
I went to http://www.writetothem.com/ – put in my postcode and sent a letter expressing concern directly to Ken Clarke. It was remarkably easy.
You get an email back to confirm that you really did want to send a letter – and off it goes…
Jim – an excellent, comprehensive site – this is going to be very useful!
Jenny and Noel Marshall, TABU
Just received a reply from Ken Clarke in response to my http://www.writetothem.com/ letter.
As an MP he has limited powers to directly intervene – but he is able to enage with the main groups involved and is able to direct concerns to the right place…
I just seen that Morrisons at Gamston is pushing a petition, in store, to get the World Cup finals to be played in England, no problem with that but isn’t using the Gamston store rubbing salt in their customers’ wounds? Could TABU approach the company and ask for a petition against the new stadium to be put on display, as well, this would give an informed balance?
Morrisons would gain massively from any Gamston development and are very clever if they are indeed campaigning for the World Cup to come to England.
If they were hit with lots of complaints regarding the petition then they may consider stopping it. But only if it is enough letters for them to be genuinely worried that they will lose a LOT of customers.
Upsetting a couple residents of a nearby village won’t distract from the potential of thousands of new customers.
Of course you could always carry out your own petition outside the front doors countering theirs and hope you get more signatures than them. That would be taken far more seriously than a letter appealing for ‘informed balance’.
re airport development…… posibility of 1200 new homes and a new business to kick start the site….could this be a Tesco Supermarket?
